So I started this blog some time ago but have rarely updated it, though I want to do more.

Today I have a question about taking some insulin, or not. I’ve been working hard on keeping my numbers low. This morning when I awoke I was 95. Tonight before dinner I was 99.

Dinner was a salad with a few slices of ham, a few slices of salami and a some Gouda cheese strips. Blush vinaigrette  was the dressing of choice. So with very low carbs in my dinner and my numbers being good, I for went my insulin shot.

Good idea or bad?

So I had checked my sugars earlier than usual (126 after lunch) and decided to check them before bed time. 264. WTF happened?? Had to think about it and realized not long before I had a bowl of fresh cherries for a late snack without insulin and so it spiked my sugars way up. This morning upon awaking I checked again and it was at 124.

That was a scare. I won’t make that mistake again, that’s for sure.

Breakfast was oatmeal with a handful of blueberries.

On a positive note, I’m down to 264.4 on my weight! (-3.3 lbs)

So over the last six months I have brought my A1C down from 9 to 7.9 and then to 7. This is where I have stalled. I test my blood sugars twice a day, before breakfast and before dinner. Occasionally I have a high of around 200. This may happen one or twice a week. But mostly I’m in the 130-150 range giving me an average of 147. I don’t think that is enough to drop my A1C below 7.

I also have a cronic wound on the bottom of my foot. Now they’re talking about surgery. Not good.

I have decided to start a modified fast of Daniel on Monday. 21 days of no meat, no bread, and no sweets.

On Monday I had a cheese and mushroom omelet for breakfast. Some popcorn at lunch time as I wasn’t overly hungry because of the large omelet I had earlier and lentil soup for dinner.

Yesterday I had oatmeal, salad and twice baked potato. A cucumber was a late evening snack.

Results:

Weight from 267.7 to 266.4  -1.3 lbs
Blood sugar: Before dinner 96. Awaking 100.
I even had dropped my insulin intake a few notches because of it. If this is the result in two days, I can’t wait to see what 21 days brings.

Life is tough. It’s even tougher if you’re a diabetic. My last A1C was a 9. Down 1/2 a point from the time before. That’s down from a high of 11, so I’m heading in the right direction. I’m hoping to have it even further down when I’m checked again in December. It’s hard, but I know I can do it. Mostly right now my daily sugars are in line to where they’re supposed to be. It doesn’t mean I don’t have bad numbers now and then, but they are a lot less frequently than what they were before I started paying attention.

Let’s face it, nobody wants to poke their finger 12 times a day. Right now I’ve been doing it twice a day. Fasting in the morning and just before dinner and once or twice a week 2 hours after dinner. This gives me a good awareness of where my sugars are at so I can adjust my medication.

The second step I’ve been doing is paying attention to what I eat. I’ve downloaded the app, “My Fitness Pal,” so I can keep track of the crap I’ve been shoveling down my neck. By daily recording what I eat, has opened my eyes to the crap I eat and how much of it. By being aware, I’m changed my diet considerable but over time. Not everything in one day. By doing the above I’m seeing a lot better numbers in my daily sugar readings. That makes my endocrinologist a happy doctor. Making me a happy man.

Next step, I have to start walking/exercising a bit more than what I do.

With the third anniversary of my heart attack on the near horizon, I was thinking as I walked my dogs this morning about how my dog Kane helped in my recovery. Let me explain. After returning home from the hospital where I had stents inserted and had sustained some damage to my heart, I was barely able to walk to the bathroom. It took about a week to get to the point of being able to walk to the end of the block and back….slowly. Too slowly for my liking.

I decided to do something about it and hooked up the harness to my Husky Kane and off we went for a train. I call it a train because my Husky is the engine and I am the caboose. First we went around the block, but it wasn’t long before I had him pulling me around for a mile and then two and finally three miles.

To this day I praise him in the help of my recovery. Thus, partially saving my life. If not for him I’m sure I’d still be shuffling like George Burns in his nineties rather then the almost full strides I do today.

Since my heart attack almost three years ago I’ve reduced the amount of salt in my diet considerably. So much to the point I don’t add salt on top of any of my food anymore.

Today I stopped  at U.S.Egg for breakfast and treated myself to a plate of biskets and gravy. Something I don’t have very often anymore.

Though the food was good, but I could really taste the salt in the sausage gravy. It made my wonder exactly how much salt did I used to consume before my heart attack?

I used to be able to eat a large bag of Lay’s potato chips but now after only several chips, I can’t eat any more because they are too salty.

The recommend daily dose of salt is 1500 milligrams per day. For sure I blew that this morning with my breakfast.

If you can’t taste the salt in your food, it’s probable because you are using way too much and have desensitized your taste buds to it. I recommend you monitor your salt intake for a couple of days. I think you’ll be surprised at the amount you take in.

Could a liquid diet reverse diabetes? It ‘could transform treatment and provide a drug-free way of treating the condition’

Researchers are looking at whether a low-calorie liquid diet can reverse type 2 diabetes or reduce the need for insulin.

Previous research has found very low calorie diets can potentially reverse type 2 diabetes in people recently diagnosed with the condition (defined as being diagnosed within the previous four years).

In the earlier study at the University of Newcastle, 11 patients were put on an eight-week low-calorie diet of soups, shakes and non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli and spinach.

Twelve weeks after starting, seven of the patients had normal blood sugar levels; the patients also lost an average of 2 st 5 lb.

Now a three-month trial at Imperial College London is assessing the benefits of a low-calorie diet on 90 patients with long-term type 2 diabetes (who could have had the condition for as long as ten years) who are taking insulin to treat it.

They will follow one of two regimens: half will have soups and shakes, followed by the gradual reintroduction of food.

They will have just 800 calories a day (the recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men). The other 45 patients will stick to a standard low-calorie diet (around 1,700 calories a day) and regular exercise.

All patients will be tracked over the course of a year and will have their BMI monitored every month.

It’s thought low-calorie diets cause the body to burn fat stored in and around the liver and pancreas (which produces insulin). This fat stops these organs from working properly, meaning insulin production drops and blood sugars rise.

But if the body suddenly has fewer calories, it’s forced to burn this fat for energy. As a result, the organ function returns to normal. Adrian Brown, a specialist dietitian at Imperial who is co-ordinating the study, says the patients in the trial will use specially designed low- calorie liquid meal replacement products to ensure they receive all their nutritional needs.

‘Low calorie diets could transform diabetes treatment and provide a drug-free way of treating and even reversing the condition,’ he says.

‘We hope this trial, the largest of its kind to date, will provide us with further evidence of the effectiveness of this new approach.’

However, he cautions that patients must not attempt to use low-calorie diets without consulting their GP or medical team.

Commenting on the study, Catherine Collins, principal dietitian at St George’s Hospital London, says: ‘Very low-calorie diets for type 2 diabetes may prove useful for those battling weight issues, but blood sugar will need to be monitored carefully to avoid it from dropping too low.’
